TIPS Prices Demand Alternatives

By on October 28, 2010

With Treasury Inflation Protected securities (TIPS) trading at prices approaching record highs and being auctioned off at negative yields investors should probably look for their inflation protection elsewhere. Some alternatives include (in my personal order of preference):

  1. Global large cap equities (PG, KO, PEP, YUM, PFE, AZN, GSK, SNY)
  2. Resource related equities (COP, WY, RYN, CVX, ECA, XOM, VMC, SU, TOT)
  3. Foreign Equities (VEU, VWO)
  4. Real Estate (VNQ, JOE, MTN)
  5. Commodities (DBA, DBC, DJP, GCC, GSG)
  6. Foreign Currencies (FXE, FXA, FXB, FXF)

Caveat: Commodity ETFs have fairly high expense ratios so shop around. A good place to compare ETFs is at ETF Guide.
