Berkshire Hathaway held its much followed annual meeting over the weekend. Becky Quick, Andrew Ross Sorkin and Joe Kernen interviewed Berkshire chairman and most famous investor in the world, Warren Buffett, this morning.
Buffett said he was buying stocks (two U. S. stocks he wouldn’t name, but that they already own).

The Wall Street Journal recently featured an article entitled, “Stocks are Riskier Than You Think,” by Zvi Bodie and Rachelle Taqqu. The article started out promisingly enough but wandered into the muddy waters promoting active management (hedge funds) and purchasing options to hedge risk. Many astute readers of the WSJ pounced on the questionable conclusions of the authors. There were nearly 100 comments following the article.
Most of the readers came to the defense of stocks and rightly so. It appears the authors of the “Stocks are Riskier…” article were confused by the volatility of stocks and not giving enough credence to equities’ historical tendency to rise above the rate of inflation and provide protection of purchasing power.

Consuelo Mack recently interviewed index fund devotee and consultant Charles Ellis, author of “Winning the Loser’s Game.” Ellis also advises the Yale endowment which had 20 years of positive returns and returned 16% per year from 1998 to 2008. Ellis has written a new book entitled, .”
Ellis began the interview talking about the importance of investors saving while they are earning money due to the difficulty catching up in later years.

Steve Forbes recently interviewed Whitney Tilson, Founder and Managing Partner, T2 Partners, about how he picks stocks and his opinion of the current environment. Tilson gained some notoriety by forecasting the housing market’s woes on CBS’s “60 Minutes” back in 2008 (link).
Tilson calls himself an opportunistic value investor who “at the end of the day tries to buy 50 cent dollars and short five dollar dollars.”

Don Hays, Hays Advisory Group, was showcased in an interview with Margaret Brennan at Bloomberg.com. Hays said the peak of the panic occurred on August 8th and the market has been forming a bottom. He believes all of the pieces are in place for the market to rally.
Brennan challenged Hays’ thesis by pointing out that trading volume has been light. Hays responded that rallies usually begin on low volume. Volume expands when the market breaks out which has not happened yet, according to Hays.
