Rupal Bhansali on Finding Investments Off the Beaten Path
Rupal Bhansali, CIO, International Equities, Ariel Investments, was interviewed this month by Consuelo Mack on WealthTrack. Bhansali is the portfolio manager for Ariel’s international and global strategies and oversees research of investments. A review of the performance of the Ariel Global Equity Fund through November 30, 2012 shows it being up 1.9% versus the MSCI AC World Indexes gain of 14.2%.
David Rolley, Co-Head, Global Fixed Income Group, Loomis Sayles, was also featured in the interview with Mack and commented on the bond market.
Bhansali and Rolley reviewed the surprises for the year. Bhansali commented on the surprising strength of developed markets compared to emerging markets. Rolley mentioned the lack of volatility experienced over the past 12 months.
Looking to the future, Bhansali said investors should concentrate on choosing alpha rather than relying on the market’s beta to generate returns. Bhansali proceeded to explain the difference between alpha and beta.
Bhansali said all bad things come to an end and she sees better times ahead for the pharmaceutical industry. Bhansali finds good value in GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK).
Rolley discussed at length the Fed’s emphasis on pushing GDP up via yield suppression and the possible aftermath of such a policy.
