Problems With Gargantuan Mutual Funds
John Waggoner at USA Today exposes the challenges encountered by mutual funds with large asset bases. One prime example is Fidelity Magellan, which once was the largest fund, but had a dismal decade in the 2000s where it underperformed the S&P 500.
The largest fund currently is Pimco Total Return which has been performing very well until now, but could possibly suffer the same fate as Magellan if its agility and selection of investments become limited.
