This Frontline episode aired on January 14, 1997 when the Dow was at 6,762; three years before the market peaked. Anyone who bought and held the Dow on that date would have made 2.7% annual returns. If you add in dividends, it comes to around 5% per year. Not bad, but not enough to generate wealth.
